Update, May 15, 4pm: the City of Minneapolis’s Economic Development & Regulatory Services Committee voted to approve the 44th & Penn Redevelopment Plan at its May 15 meeting. This means the City will now officially try to purchase the properties at 2139 and 2147 44th Avenue North. This is the first step of many toward redeveloping the properties.
The Victory Neighborhood Association submitted a letter to the City of Minneapolis supporting the
44th & Penn Avenue North Redevelopment Plan. The plan documents the City’s interest in acquiring the commercial properties located at 2139 and 2147 44th Avenue North for future mixed-use, transit-oriented development. The plan was reviewed and discussed by ViNA’s membership at its April 25 neighborhood meeting, at its spring Livability Committee meetings, and at its May 2 board meeting. The plan had overwhelming support from all parties.
The Victory Neighborhood Association believes the commercial node located at 44th & Penn provides important opportunities for neighbors to live, work, and connect. And, with the addition of two planned Bus Rapid Transit lines, it is prudent for the neighborhood association to proactively identify promising development opportunities for the node. It is for this reason that the Victory Neighborhood Association chose to support the redevelopment plan.

If the Economic Development & Regulatory Services Committee approves the redevelopment plan, the City will move forward with attempting to purchase the properties. The City will only acquire the properties if the sellers agree to selling at fair market value. If the properties are acquired, the Victory Neighborhood Association will work with residents and the City to identify development opportunities that meet the needs of the neighborhood.
