The Victory Neighborhood is located in North Minneapolis, in the Camden Community on the northwest corner and is home to approximately 4,500 residents who live in the neighborhood’s classic homes. Victory’s geographic boundaries are:West: Victory Memorial Parkway/Ryan Lake
North: Canadian Pacific Railroad
East: Newton Avenue North
South: Dowling Avenue North
The Victory Neighborhood is named for the historic three-mile Victory Memorial Parkway which runs through the community. ‘The Drive’ was dedicated in 1921 as a memorial to the Hennepin County service members who died in World War I. Each casualty is recognized with a tree planted in their honor and a marker noting their service. Additional monuments can be found along the parkway which was designated as a historic district by the Minnesota State Legislature in 2005. The parkway is the largest outdoor World War I memorial in the US.
Parks
In addition to the green space provided by Victory Memorial Parkway, the neighborhood is also home to three Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) parks. They are:
Victory Park on 44th & Upton Avenues is adjacent to Loring Community School and has a tennis court, two half-court basketball courts, two playgrounds, picnic and grilling areas, and a recreational field. MPRB often provides youth and adult activities at the park in the summer. More information on those activities can be found at minneapolisparks.org.
Victory Prairie Dog Park is an off-leash area dog park found at 47th & Russell Avenues North. The 2.62 acre park is fenced and features a walking trail and open field. To use the park, dogs must be registered with the Minneapolis Animal Care & Control and have an off-leash license with MPRB.
Ryan Lake Park is a waterfront park on 47th and Xerxes Avenues. The park was developed by volunteers of the Victory Neighborhood Association starting in 2003 and officially opened in 2017. The park features a fishing pier, walking trail, picnic plaza, and native gardens. Canoes and kayaks can be launched from its shore.
Schools
The Victory Neighborhood is home to two elementary schools. The Mastery School is located at 40th & Thomas Avenues. The school is part of the Harvest Network of charter schools and is available to students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Loring Community School is part of Minneapolis Public Schools and is located at 44th & Thomas Avenue. Loring is open to students in pre-k through fifth grade. The school feeds into Olson Middle School located in the Shingle Creek Neighborhood and ultimately into Patrick Henry High School in the Camden Community.
Business
The Victory Neighborhood has commercial nodes found on Dowling, between Queen and Russell, 39th & Thomas, 42nd & Thomas, and 44th & Penn. The nodes feature a variety of businesses including options for dining, coffee, hair care, cell phone service, car repair, child care, art classes, wellness, self-care, medical, mail, moving and more. The neighborhood is very walkable and is intentional about supporting local businesses.
Transit
The Victory Neighborhood is primarily serve by Metro Transit’s Route 19 and C Line Bus Rapid Transit. The lines originate in Brooklyn Center and end in downtown Minneapolis. Stops are available along Penn, 42nd, Dowling, and Thomas Avenues.
D Line Bus Rapid Transit will be replacing much of the Route 5’s bus service in the coming years, including a stop at 44th & Penn.
