Many events and decisions of the 20th Century impacted what Victory looks like today. In preparation for the 100th Anniversary of the WWI Armistice and its significance to our neighborhood, ViNA is encouraging our community to explore our local history. Check out one or all of the following events to help gain an understanding of our rich, recent history.
Author Talk: Curt Brown

The Friends of Webber Park Library are hosting a talk with author, Curt Brown, who will share from his recent book, Minnesota, 1918: When Flu, Fire, and War Ravaged the State.
Brown’s book explores the monumental year through stories from around the state; from residents of small towns obliterated by fire, to officials in metropolitan centers faced with the spread of disease, to soldiers returning home from World War I. Books will be available for purchase and signing at the event.
Film Screening: Beaurevoir

Beaurevoir is a documentary that tells the story of one soldier who lost his life on Oct. 7, 1918, five weeks before the end of World War I. Walter Lindahl, son of Swedish immigrants from Minneapolis, was killed in action in the waning days of the Great War. Ninety-two years later, his long-lost letters from the war are discovered in the basement of an old house in St. Paul. Filmmaker Emily Haddad is the great niece of Lindahl and will be present to discuss the documentary.
History Night

At our October gathering, the Victory Neighborhood Association will share space and explore our neighborhood’s 20th Century history. Buzzy Bohn from the Camden Community Historical Society will present her research on the history of Camden and the building and significance of Victory Memorial Parkway. Diana Houston from Hennepin County will reveal details of an event planned for the parkway that will mark the Armistice’s anniversary. Bring your own questions about our neighborhood’s history.
100th Anniversary World War I Remembrance

Join Hennepin County and local leaders to mark Veterans’ Day and the centennial of the World War I Armistice. A program begins at 10AM that will feature speakers who will discuss the war’s impact on the local community. A moment of silence begins at 11AM and attendees will be able to observe the ‘sun dial’ feature of the flagpole which casts a shadow on a plaza marker every year on 11/11.
Owning Up: Racism & Housing in Minneapolis

Owning Up: Racism and Housing in Minneapolis explores the history of racial housing discrimination in Minneapolis. The exhibit demonstrates the lasting effects of structural discrimination and focuses on the history of redlining and racially restrictive housing covenants (like those found in Victory). The exhibit is part of a series of events marking the 50th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act and special Neighborhood Nights are offered at 6PM on November 7 and January 11, where attendees can speak with the curators in addition to touring the exhibit.
