A Little Free Library is a “take a book, share a book” free book exchange. They function on the honor system. You do not need to share a book in order to take one. If you take a book or two from a little library, try to bring some to share to that same library, or another in your area, when you can.
Benefits of a Little Free Library
Promotes Literacy and Education
Little Free Libraries make books accessible to everyone, regardless of socioeconomic status. They encourage reading by providing easy access to a variety of books, fostering a love of reading, especially among children.
Builds Community Connections
These libraries serve as gathering points for communities, creating opportunities for interaction among neighbors. Sharing books can lead to conversations, relationships, and a stronger sense of community.
Encourages Sustainability
By promoting the reuse of books, LFLs help reduce waste and encourage a culture of sharing and recycling. People can pass on books they’ve read and loved to others who might enjoy them
Supports Inclusivity and Diversity
Little Free Libraries often contain a diverse selection of books, including those from various cultures, perspectives, and genres. This helps to broaden horizons and promotes inclusivity.
Inspires Creativity and Local Art
Many Little Free Libraries are creatively designed and decorated by local artists or community members. This adds beauty to the neighborhood and allows for artistic expression.
Provides 24/7 Access
Unlike traditional libraries, Little Free Libraries are open all the time, making it convenient for people to access books whenever they want.
